Autonomic Dysreflexia
Autonomic dysreflexia is a potentially dangerous clinical syndrome that develops in individuals with spinal cord injuries, resulting in acute, uncontrolled hypertension.
Digital Rectal Exam
The digital rectal exam is performed by a physiatrist, emergency medicine doctor, or neurosurgeon to determine the response of the nervous system at the lowest level of the spinal cord, the nerves leading to muscles around the anus. This is performed by the insertion of a gloved finger into the anus so the physician can determine whether there is any sensation and whether the anal muscles will contract. If there is sensation or if there is voluntary contraction of the anal sphincter, the spinal cord injury is defined as incomplete. If there is no sensation and no voluntary contraction, the spinal cord injury is complete.
